Message Compression New from C 39.5.5/S 39.5.2

Information

  • The XML protocol used for communication between client and server contains a lot of redundant information. Therefore, depending on customizing and data volume, messages can be of a size that may lead to performance losses, especially if the network bandwidth is low.
  • In order to counteract this, compression may be used.
  • In order for this to work, both client and server have to be configured accordingly.

Configuration

  • The server configuration is done via the ENABLE_COMPRESSION and COMPRESSION_LEVEL parameters in the planta_server.conf file.
  • The client configuration is done via the compressed and compress_level client parameters.
  • The compression can be configured individually for client and server. The data compression is only activated if compression is set for both server and client.
    • If compression is activated for the server, the server can be used with different clients (i.e. activated as well as deactivated compression).
  • In the Standard, compression is activated for both components, using the default compression ratio (6).

Notes

  • In order to be able to use message compression, a server version S 39.5.2 as well as a client version C 39.5.5 must be used.
  • For a compressing VPN tunnel, no advantage is to be expected from compression.
    • If against expectations, performance losses do occur due to the use of compression, it can be turned off for single clients.
